The Last Thing You Wanted

The last name of your second grade teacher,
The last costume you wore for Halloween,
The last morning you kissed your grandmother,
The last place you knew you shouldn’t have been,
The last three digits of your license plate,
The last amount of the electric bill,
The last increase of the postage rate,
The last evening you heard a whippoorwill,
The last drawer where you hunted your keys,
The last appointment that went unmet,
The last stoplight where you knew your way,
The last meal you knew where everyone sat,
The first time you noticed my face and how,
Despite its concern, it was nameless now.
